DLSR for £250?

I've got £250 to get a camera as a gift for someone that wants a DSLR to take with them on a round the world trip (alright for some!)... but I know bugger all about cameras.

Is £250 going to be able to get something reasonable for someone wanting to learn how to use a DSLR? Or would it be a better to get something like a hybrid (FZ18?) instead for that sort of money. I could just give them the money to put towards the camera, but I've been entrusted to get them one

I currently have a Nikon D40 ... I don't think you can get much better for the money.
